A thali can simplify lunch or dinner during Ganesh Chaturthi. Instead of ordering rice, breads, vegetables, dal and sweets separately, families can get a complete meal in one pack. It also makes it easier to estimate portions when food is required for several people.
The thalis listed on food-delivery platform Zomato will differ according to the city and restaurant. Some outlets may prepare a Ganesh Chaturthi menu, while others offer regular vegetarian, Maharashtrian or fasting meals. Here are the main options to look for.
Ganesh Chaturthi Special Thali
A Ganesh Chaturthi special thali is usually a vegetarian meal created for the festival period. It may contain puri or chapati, rice, dal, one or two vegetable preparations, salad or koshimbir, pickle and a sweet.
Some restaurants may add modak or puran poli to make the meal relevant to the festival. Do not assume that every special thali includes them. Read the complete item list because photographs shown on ordering platforms may be for representation.
This thali can work for lunch or dinner when the family wants a festival meal without selecting each dish separately.
Maharashtrian Thali

A Maharashtrian thali can include varan bhaat, amti, masale bhaat, batata bhaji, another seasonal vegetable, puri or chapati, koshimbir, pickle and papad. Puran poli or shrikhand may be served as the sweet.
The actual selection can change between regions and restaurants. Some thalis may have a Kolhapuri influence and use more spice, while others may offer a simpler home-style meal.
Check whether the rice, breads and dal come in fixed portions. If you are ordering for a group, full portions of the main dishes may provide more food than several individual thalis.
Puran Poli Thali
A puran poli thali places the sweet flatbread at the centre of the meal. Puran poli is stuffed with a mixture of cooked chana dal and jaggery, with cardamom or nutmeg used in some recipes.
The thali may include one or two puran polis along with ghee, rice, dal, vegetables, curd and pickle. Confirm whether ghee is included or charged separately. Also check the number of puran polis, as one piece may not be enough for every customer.
Satvik Thali

A satvik thali may suit families that avoid onion and garlic during Ganesh Chaturthi. It can include dal, rice, roti, potato curry, paneer or another vegetable preparation, curd and a sweet.
However, the term “satvik” is not used in exactly the same way by every restaurant. Contact the outlet if your household follows specific rules. Ask about onion, garlic, mushrooms and the oil used for cooking.
A vegetarian label does not confirm that a meal is satvik or prepared in a separate kitchen.
Vrat Thali
A vrat thali is intended for people observing a fast. It may contain sama rice, sabudana khichdi, potato curry, curd, fruit and puris or rotis made with kuttu or singhara flour.
Fasting practices differ between families. Some people eat dairy and peanuts, while others avoid them. Check whether sendha namak is used instead of regular salt and whether the restaurant handles wheat flour in the same kitchen.
Read the item list closely, particularly if the meal is being ordered for someone with an allergy. Sabudana dishes often contain peanuts.
Regular Vegetarian Thali
A regular vegetarian thali is likely to be available in more cities than a festival-specific meal. It may include dal, rice, roti, vegetables, curd, salad, pickle and dessert.
It may not have modak or puran poli but these can be added separately as sweets. This approach can be useful outside Maharashtra, where a complete Ganesh Chaturthi thali may be difficult to find.
Check whether the thali is described as limited or unlimited. Delivery orders generally contain fixed portions even when the restaurant offers unlimited servings to dine-in customers.
North Indian Thali

A North Indian thali can include dal, paneer, seasonal vegetables, rice, roti, raita and gulab jamun. It is not a traditional Ganeshotsav meal, but its dishes are widely available and can serve a family lunch or dinner.
It can also be paired with a box of modaks or laddoos ordered from a sweet shop. If you are buying multiple thalis, compare the combined cost with ordering full portions of dal, paneer, rice and breads.
