When you think about a smart ring, you probably expect the basics. It tracks your sleep, keeps an eye on your heart rate, measures recovery, and maybe tells you whether you’ve had a good night’s rest.
After that, there’s usually not much left to add.
Ultrahuman looked at things differently.
Instead of treating the Ring AIR as a product with a fixed set of features, the company introduced PowerPlugs—a collection of optional experiences that users can switch on depending on what they’re trying to improve.
Think of it less as another app update and more as giving your smart ring new abilities whenever you need them.
Health goals don’t stay the same
The way we think about our health changes over time.
There may be a phase where you’re trying to sleep better. A few months later, you’re travelling frequently and struggling with jet lag. Someone else might be trying to understand their menstrual cycle, while another person simply wants to pay more attention to heart health.
Most wearables expect everyone to use the same features in the same way.
PowerPlugs takes the opposite approach.
Instead of putting every possible tool in front of every user, Ultrahuman lets people decide what they actually want to use. Some PowerPlugs are free, while others are available as premium add-ons, so the experience feels a little more personal instead of overwhelming.
The first PowerPlug focused on heart health
The biggest announcement alongside PowerPlugs was AFib Detection.
It made the Ultrahuman Ring AIR the first smart ring capable of detecting signs of atrial fibrillation, or AFib, while you sleep.
AFib is the most common type of irregular heart rhythm. It doesn’t always cause obvious symptoms, but then if it goes unnoticed for long enough, it can increase the risk of serious complications like stroke or heart failure.
The ring quietly monitors heart rhythm overnight, looking for patterns that may indicate AFib. If you’re someone with a history of irregular heart rhythms—or simply someone who wants another layer of insight into your heart health—it offers a way to keep an eye on things without changing your daily routine.
There’s a PowerPlug for more than just heart health
AFib Detection may have grabbed the headlines, but it’s only one part of the platform.
Some PowerPlugs are designed around everyday habits.
Circadian Rhythm, for example, suggests the best times to get sunlight, exercise, or start winding down before bed. Caffeine Window helps you work out when to have that afternoon coffee without making it harder to fall asleep later.
If you travel often, the Jet Lag PowerPlug builds a personalised schedule around your flights, using light exposure, naps, caffeine, and melatonin to help your body adjust a little faster.
Women’s health is another area Ultrahuman has invested in. Features like Cycle Tracking, Ovulation, and Pregnancy Mode are designed to support users through different stages, offering insights that actually go beyond basic cycle calendars.
Then there are PowerPlugs like Vitamin D, which estimates the best time to step outside based on UV conditions and your skin type, and Weight Loss, which combines calorie burn with food and glucose data to give a clearer picture of energy balance.
They’re all built on the same wearable data, but each one looks at it through a different lens.
The platform isn’t limited to Ultrahuman
One interesting part of the announcement didn’t get as much attention.
Ultrahuman also introduced UltraSignal, a developer platform that gives third-party developers access to raw sensor data from the Ring AIR, including temperature, movement, and optical heart rate signals.
The idea is that not every useful health feature has to come directly from Ultrahuman.
As more developers build on the platform, users could eventually see an even wider range of specialised PowerPlugs tailored to different aspects of health and wellness.
A smart ring that keeps changing
Most wearables improve through occasional software updates.
PowerPlugs takes that idea a step further.
Instead of simply refining what’s already there, Ultrahuman is gradually adding entirely new experiences that users can choose based on what’s happening in their lives at the time.
Today you might care about better sleep. A year from now, your priorities could be heart health, pregnancy, or frequent travel.
Rather than asking people to buy a new device every time those priorities change, Ultrahuman’s idea is to let the same ring grow with them. That, more than any single PowerPlug, is what makes the platform feel different.
