Lots of people look forward to one big holiday for months. It could be a week in Europe, a trip to Southeast Asia or a couple weeks somewhere they’ve wanted to visit for years. Short breaks, however, often get put at the bottom of the list. After all, is it worth the bother of going away for two or three days?
Well, yes. Not every holiday needs to be a massive event and there is something rather lovely about getting away for a long weekend without having to plan half a year in advance.
A quick trip also takes some of the pressures. You don’t have to see every attraction. You don’t have to go from place to place all day long. A good meal, a couple of hours exploring the city, and a change of scene can do the trick. Sometimes that’s all it takes.
Destination matters, of course. Traveling for 3 days doesn’t make a lot of sense if most of that time is spent getting there and back. Usually a nearby city or somewhere with a convenient flight connection is the better choice. Then there’s the other question of arrival times. A cheap flight arriving midnight and leaving early the next morning may not leave much of a holiday.

This is where comparing flight options beforehand helps. Skyscanner’s Everywhere search is handy when there is no particular destination in mind. It allows travelers to see different places from their departure airport instead of spending hours deciding where they want to go. Then the Whole Month search is useful as well, especially when the dates are flexible and a slightly different weekend could work out better.
Of course, short breaks are not always less expensive. You still have to pay for flights and hotel stays and airport transfers can really add up. The idea is not necessarily to spend less. This is to allow for smaller trips, instead of waiting for one big holiday all year.
You don’t have to choose between a two-week holiday or a long weekend. They both have their place. And sometimes coming back after three days away feels a lot better than spending another six months waiting for the next proper break.
