Long train journeys in India unfold slowly. The bags are pushed under the seat. The window becomes a frame for changing landscapes. Strangers exchange destinations, then stories. Time stretches in a way that feels different from flights or road trips.
And then, at some point, a practical question pops in your mind: what are we going to eat?
For years, that question came with uncertainty. Pantry car meals were limited. Ordering from platform vendors required quick decisions during short halts. Home-packed food worked for a few hours, but not for overnight journeys. Travellers adjusted. They managed. They compromised.
That compromise is no longer necessary.
Today, you can order from restaurants along your train route and have the meal delivered directly to your coach. The process is simple, but more importantly, it feels naturallike an extension of how you already order food in daily life.
Here is how it works, clearly and without guesswork.
Step 1: Find the Train Ordering Option in the App
Open the Zomato app as you normally would. In the search bar, type “train” or “IRCTC.” You will see an option labelled “Food on Train.”
You do not need a separate application. The feature is built into the same interface you use for regular food delivery.

Step 2: Enter Journey Details
Once you are in “Food on Train” you will have option for adding one of the following:
Your PNR number
Train number
Train name

Once entered, your journey is detected automatically. The app identifies your route and displays the stations where you can order food online. Not every stop is suitable for food delivery. Some halts are too brief. This removes the need to manually check station names or guess timing. Your trip details guide the experience.
Step 3: Select the Station for Delivery
The app shows stations along your route that support food delivery.
You can choose a station based on your meal time (breakfast, lunch, snacks, or dinner) and the halt duration.
Well, do keep in mind that placing the order at least 30 minutes in advance gives restaurants enough time to prepare your meal and coordinate delivery. Also, if you want to be well prepared, you can place orders 7 days in advance.

Step 4: Browse Restaurant Options
After selecting a station, you will see a list of restaurants serving food on the train. The browsing experience on the Zomato app is similar to ordering at home.
You can:
Check ratings
Choose cuisine preferences
View menus
Options vary by station, allowing you to discover regional dishes along your route. You’re not limited to generic travel meals; you can choose what suits your taste.

Step 5: Place the order
Once you have selected your delivery station or halt, choose your preferred meal and place the order. The restaurant partner will begin preparing your meal according to the real-time train location and arrival time.

Step 6: Receive the Meal at Your Coach
When the train stops at the selected station, you won’t need to make frantic calls or search for the delivery person, as the delivery partner will bring your order directly to your coach. There is no need to step off the train unless you choose to.
Step 7: Track and Get Support if Needed
Just like regular food deliveries at home, train orders can also be tracked in real time. You receive updates on confirmation, preparation, and dispatch. In case there is any issue related to timing or delivery, the Zomato app provides customer support as well.
Why This Changes the Journey
Food during train travel used to be unpredictable. Now it can be planned.
You decide what you want to eat. You choose when and where it will arrive. You receive it at your coach without rushing through crowded platforms.
The journey still carries its familiar charm: conversations across berths, shared snacks, and tea vendors walking through the aisles.
But the question of food no longer needs to interrupt the experience.
Instead of wondering what will be available at the next stop, you already know what is coming.
And sometimes, on a long journey, that small certainty makes all the difference.
Ordering food on trains is now simple and predictable. Using the Zomato app, passengers can enter their PNR, train number, or name to auto-detect their journey, select a delivery station, browse restaurants, and place an order in advance. Meals are prepared based on train timing and delivered directly to the coach, with live tracking and support available—removing uncertainty and replacing it with planned, convenient dining during travel.
