Losing a smart ring is a little different from losing a phone. There is no screen to call, no obvious sound coming from across the room, and its small size makes it remarkably easy to overlook.
If you have an Ultrahuman Ring, there is a feature in the app that can help when it disappears: Find My Ring. It can guide you towards the ring when it still has battery and is close enough to your phone to maintain a Bluetooth connection.
That last part is important. Find My Ring is useful for a ring that has been misplaced recently, but it cannot magically locate one that has been sitting somewhere with a dead battery or outside Bluetooth range for days.
How to use Find My Ring
If you think your Ring is somewhere nearby, you can start the search from the Ultrahuman app.
- Open the Ultrahuman app.
- Tap the menu in the top-left corner.
- Select your Ring.
- Go to Ring Details and scroll down to Find My Ring.
- Follow the directions in the app to move towards the Ring’s location.
The feature works with Ring AIR, Ring PRO and the Ring PRO Charging Case.
There is one important condition: the device needs to have some battery remaining and be within Bluetooth range of your phone, which generally means only a few metres. If the Ring was left somewhere far away or its battery has completely run down, Find My Ring will not be able to establish a live connection.
Set up a couple of things before the Ring goes missing
Find My Ring is much more useful when the relevant settings are already in place.
Make sure location tracking is enabled for the Ultrahuman app. This allows the app to show the Ring’s last known location, which can give you a useful starting point. If you cannot remember whether you took it off at home, work or the gym, that last location can narrow the search considerably.
If you have a Ring PRO, pair the charging case as well. The case can be located through the same feature, but it needs to have been paired beforehand.
These are easy things to overlook when everything is working normally, which is precisely why they are worth checking before you actually need them.
What if the Ring is out of Bluetooth range?
This is where the search becomes more old-fashioned.
Find My Ring relies on an active Bluetooth connection, so if the Ring is too far away or if it has run out of battery, the feature cannot continue tracking it.
Start by checking the last sync time in the Ultrahuman app. That tells you the last point at which the Ring was connected to your phone, giving you an approximate idea of when you still had it nearby.
From there, retrace your movements rather than searching the entire day at random. Think about where you were between that last sync and the moment you noticed the Ring was missing. A desk, bedside table, gym bag, car or bathroom counter can be more likely than somewhere completely unrelated to your routine.
If there is still some battery left, keep moving
A Ring that is somewhere inside your home and still has charge is worth searching for immediately.
Keep the Ultrahuman app open and move slowly through the rooms where you think you may have left it. As you get within Bluetooth range, the Ring can reconnect, giving you a much better chance of narrowing down its location.
This is one situation where acting sooner helps. If the Ring has only been misplaced for a short time, there is a reasonable chance it still has enough battery for the feature to work. Waiting several days can turn a Bluetooth-assisted search into a hunt through cushions, drawers, bags and pockets.
Find My Ring is useful, but it has limits
The feature is best thought of as a way to locate a nearby, powered Ring, rather than a global tracking system.
If the Ring is within Bluetooth range and still has battery, the Ultrahuman app can help guide you towards it. If it has gone flat or is sitting somewhere beyond that range, the last known sync location and a careful search of your recent movements become much more useful.
For something as small as a smart ring, knowing how the feature works before you need it can save quite a bit of frustration when it eventually disappears between the sofa cushions.
