The “One Day Earlier” Hack: Check the Night Before You Actually Want to Fly

Save money on flights by checking the evening before your planned departure. Discover how flexible travel dates, cheaper late-night flights, accommodation costs, and better arrival times can help you maximize your holiday without taking extra leave.

There is a simple flight-search habit that can save money without forcing you to change the actual length of your holiday.

Instead of searching only for the day you want to leave, check the evening before as well.

This works particularly well when your preferred departure date falls on a busy travel day. A Friday morning flight, for example, might be priced much higher than a Thursday night departure, even though the two flights are only a few hours apart. If the earlier flight works with your schedule, you can arrive at your destination without sacrificing another full day of leave.

The trick is to think about when the holiday needs to begin, rather than automatically deciding that the flight has to leave on that same calendar day.

Look at the Evening Before

Imagine you have taken leave from Monday onwards and want to spend a week in Singapore. Your first instinct might be to search for flights departing Monday morning.

Before booking, check Sunday night.

If there is a reasonably priced late-evening flight, you could leave after work or during the weekend, arrive early Monday morning and still have the entire day available. Depending on the route, that Sunday-night flight may also be cheaper because it isn’t competing with the same rush of Monday departures.

You haven’t taken an additional day off.

You’ve simply moved the journey a few hours earlier.

The Difference Can Be Bigger Around Weekends

This becomes particularly useful when your preferred departure date is already popular.

Friday evenings are a good example. People finish work, head straight to the airport and try to squeeze as much of their weekend away as possible. That creates a lot of demand for flights leaving within a relatively narrow window.

Thursday night can look very different.

There may be fewer leisure travelers trying to leave at that time, and the fare can sometimes reflect that. If you’re already planning to spend the weekend away, leaving the night before may give you both a better airfare and a little more time at the destination.

Skyscanner’s date comparison tools make it easy to check this without running completely separate searches for every possible combination.

Think About the First Night Differently

The biggest hesitation with this hack is usually the hotel.

If you arrive Thursday night instead of Friday morning, you’re technically paying for another night of accommodation. That can make the cheaper flight look less attractive.

But don’t dismiss it immediately.

A late flight followed by an inexpensive airport hotel may still work out cheaper than the more expensive Friday flight. In other cases, the difference may be small enough that having an extra evening at the destination is worth it anyway.

There are also situations where you don’t necessarily need a full extra hotel night. If you arrive late and have a comfortable airport connection to the city, you may simply be able to check in and start the next morning normally.

The calculation is different for every trip, which is why the flight saving should always be compared with the extra accommodation cost.

It Can Save Your First Morning Too

There is another advantage that doesn’t show up in the airfare.

A morning international flight can eat up a surprising amount of the day. By the time you’ve reached the airport, checked in, gone through security and spent several hours in the air, a large part of your first holiday day has disappeared.

Leaving the night before changes that.

You wake up at the destination instead of waking up early to get to the airport.

For travelers taking shorter breaks, that can make a noticeable difference. A three-day trip can feel considerably longer when the first morning isn’t spent travelling.

Don’t Ignore Your Sleep Schedule

Of course, the earlier flight isn’t automatically better.

If you finish work at 6 pm, rush to the airport and board an overnight flight without enough rest, you might arrive exhausted and spend the first day recovering. A slightly more expensive daytime flight could be a better choice if you know you won’t function well after an overnight journey.

This is particularly important when travelling with children or elderly family members.

The hack works when the earlier departure genuinely fits your routine. Saving money isn’t particularly useful if it turns the beginning of the holiday into a miserable experience.

Search One Extra Date Before You Book

The beauty of this trick is that it doesn’t require much effort.

Once you’ve found a flight for the date you originally wanted, simply check the previous evening on Skyscanner. Look at the fare, arrival time and what an additional hotel night would cost. Then compare that with your original itinerary.

Sometimes the difference will be too small to matter.

But occasionally, you’ll find a late flight that’s considerably cheaper and gives you almost an entire extra day at your destination. That’s when the small change in thinking starts to pay off. Instead of asking whether you should leave on Monday, you’re asking whether there’s a reason you need to wait until Monday in the first place.
