There’s always the pressure to go somewhere new. Once a destination has been ticked off the travel list, the next question is where to go next. Returning to the same city or country can almost feel like a missed opportunity to see somewhere new.
But why should it matter? Just because you’ve been there before doesn’t mean a place loses its charm.
The first time you go somewhere it’s usually about ticking off the obvious things. The famous sights, the popular restaurants, the museums and all the other places that appear and reappear in the travel guides. There is a lot to take in, especially when the trip is short. And sometimes the days go so fast, that the experience itself feels a little rushed.
A second visit is something different. You won’t have to wait in line for the most popular attraction or try to visit five places in one afternoon. You know your way around, what parts of the city you like, even where to get a good breakfast. So you’ll have more time to hit the places you missed on your first go-round.

It also makes it simpler to plan. You know where you’re going, and probably have a better idea of how much money you’ll need and where you’d like to stay. Of course things change and the restaurant you loved the last time you were there may have closed down. But that’s part of travel too.
And the return is not the same vacation. The first time was all about sight-seeing, the second time could be a food-trip. Hit a beach spot outside the main resort zone. There are many ways to see a place differently.
If you’re considering going back, Skyscanner’s Price Alerts can help you track the fares on a familiar route. You can also compare different airlines and departure times to find a trip that fits the plans. And if your dates are flexible, searching for prices across the month can throw up options you might otherwise miss.
There is nothing wrong in wanting to see somewhere totally new. But traveling shouldn’t be a competition for as many destinations as possible. There are places worth visiting twice and sometimes the second time is better than the first.
